Profile
The AWA remains Alberta`s frontline advocacy organization advancing the establishment of protected areas; all done through the coordination of its grassroots work with that done at the provincial and national levels- It has also tenaciously striven for better public policy for the conservation, management and ecologically sustainable use of all public lands, waters and wildlife in Alberta. Virtually all of Alberta`s waters, all of its wildlife and 73 percent of the land are public.
Environmental Commitment
The AWA is committed to the following:
- A comprehensive system of protected wild areas.
- A society with decision-making processes, policies and laws that recognize the value of nature for its own sake.
- An effective and credible advocate that fosters awareness and helps Albertans protect wild areas and wildlife.
- Speaking independently on wilderness issues.
Social Commitment
The Alberta Wilderness Association's (AWA) outreach work is achieved through communication, education, conservation and advocacy and is supported through volunteers, member and donor programs, fundraising through grants, campaigns, and events and a planned giving program.
“Wilderness exists where large areas are characterized by the dominance of natural processes, the presence of the full complement of plant and animal communities characteristic of the region, and the absence of human constraints on nature.”
- Alberta Wilderness Association.
