BC Coalition for Sustainable Forest Solutions
Profile
The BC Coalition for Sustainable Forest Solutions promotes an attainable vision of democratic local control of forests within a context of sustainability and respect for Aboriginal Title and Rights.
Our vision stands in stark contrast to that of the BC provincial government. Since coming into office, the Campbell government has made drastic changes to virtually every aspect of forest law and policy. The Province’s so-called “Forestry Revitalization Plan” is a recipe for increased corporate control of public and indigenous lands at the expense of the long-term well-being of our environment and communities. Some of the immediate results have been increased corporate consolidation, mill closures and community dislocation.
Environmental Commitment
The framework for achieving a sustainable, competitive industry must include reforms that:
- Reconcile Aboriginal and Crown title
- Create, implement, and enforce forest management standards that promote the long-term health of BC’s forest ecosystems
- Enhance public control and oversight of our forest resources, including rebuilding the public service
- Redistribute a majority of tenure at the lowest taxpayer cost in order to create a new social contract in BC’s forests and to provide greater opportunities for First Nations, communities and local jobs
- Ensure the public gets full value for forest resources through transparent log markets and related timber pricing reforms
- Ensure broad access to the timber supply and strengthen raw log export restrictions for the development of a strong, diverse value-added industry
Social Commitment
The BC Coalition for Sustainable Forest Solutions includes close to 60 First Nations, labour, environmental and community groups, representing well over a hundred thousand of British Columbians
We have come together because we believe a durable solution to British Columbia's current forestry crisis and the softwood lumber dispute can only be achieved through forest policy reforms that reflect the long-term public interest in BC's forests and communities.
This is a vision of a new social contract in our forests at a time when the BC government is proposing to simply rip up the old one.
Please download the draft legislation and let us know what you think. Better yet, please download a copy and send it to your local MLA and tell them to support it. Time is short. The future of BC's public forests is in your hands.
