The independent bluesign® standard puts a reliable and proactive tool at the disposal of the entire textile production chain – from raw material and component suppliers who manufacture e.g. yarns, dyes and additives, to textile manufacturers, to retailer and brand companies, to consumers.

The bluesign® standard developed from a project initiative in 1997. In order to guarantee that the standard is independent and therefore implementable for the greatest possible number of companies, bluesign technologies ag was founded in 2000, with headquarters in Switzerland.

The Bluesign® Standard is built around five principles:
- Resource productivity
- Consumer safety
- Air emission
- Water emission
- Occupational health and safety.

It is designed to provide solutions concerning Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) on all levels. This approach is that it links together suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and brands to cumulatively reduce the environmental footprint.

Environmental Commitment

The independent bluesign® standard is the response to colossally increasing demand for textile products that are environmentally friendly, pose no health hazards, and conserve resources to the greatest possible extent. This demand is originating as a result of strict legislation, and meeting it will be crucial for future success. The bluesign® standard is the most efficient way to guarantee compliance with the new requirements, without compromising functionality, quality or design.

The bluesign® standard starts from the ground up. It’s not about testing finished products. Instead, before production begins, components and processes are selected to ensure they meet the specified criteria. This is the only way to guarantee maximum implementation of resource productivity and EHS – that’s Environment, Health and Safety – in the most efficient and cost-effective way for everyone involved.

Social Commitment

Production processes that are designed around maximum resource productivity with a view to environmental protection, health and safety, represent an assurance for manufacturers and retailers that today's quality criteria are fulfilled in the best possible way and that applicable regulations and limits are complied with. The basic idea, right from the beginning, was to tackle the problem at its roots and to exclude substances, which are potentially hazardous to the human health or the environment, from processes at the outset via an intelligent Input Stream Management system. An independent standard was created that can be applied to the entire production chain and that delivers certainty at all levels, from raw material to final product, from chemical supplier to consumer. This in turn means measurable economic success for industry and trade while at the same time offering maximum consumer und environmental protection.
