Profile

The Bonnechere River Watershed Project is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization that is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board works in partnership with organizations that share its values and relies on the help of volunteers to implement its projects.

The Bonnechere River Watershed Project was initiated in 1998 by the Renfrew County Stewardship Council. It is a community based, volunteer organization that undertakes projects to enhance the environment and improve water quality in the streams, lakes and river course of the watershed.

The Bonnechere Valley has a rich history of use by people for transportation and exploration, logging, saw milling, agriculture, hydroelectric generation, fishing, boating and other recreation uses. Today, domestic and farm use, hydroelectric generation and recreation are the main water uses, while agriculture and forestry are the two main land uses in the watershed.

Environmental Commitment

BRWP is involved with a number of watershed enhancement projects. Projects include water quality monitoring, tree planting, youth education, bird and bat nesting boxes and wetland enhancement.

Social Commitment

The Bonnechere River Watershed Project promotes and enhances the quality and integrity of the environment and the life it supports through voluntary action of individuals and community groups within the watershed. Objectives include:
- To develop a community based, volunteer organization.
- To better understand the watershed.
- To improve the level of public understanding.
- To achieve tangible environmental improvements.

The Know Your Reach project involves the piloting of an on-line communication and resource tool. It is designed to engage and sustain community volunteers interested in science, stewardship, monitoring and decision-making that relates to the environment.

The general goal is to engage people living in the watershed on:
- What and where to reforest.
- Trails.
- Surface and ground water issues.
- Reporting of observed natural phenomenon.
- Lake planning.
- Cultural Heritage.
- School environmental projects.
- Eco-tourism.
