Profile
FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.
FSC has offices in more than 46 countries. It provides standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
The Three types of FSC certifications are:
- FSC Forest Management Certification
- FSC Chain of Custody Certification
- FSC Controlled Wood
There are special options for small and low intensity forest management.
Environmental Commitment
FSC Forest Management Certification: Forest managers/owners who want to prove that their forest operation is socially beneficial and managed in an environmentally appropriate, economically viable manner can apply for Forest Management (FM) certification.
FSC Chain of Custody Certification traces FSC certified timber through the production chain. Companies that manufacture, process or trade in timber or non-timber forest products and want to demonstrate to their customers that they use responsibly produced raw materials. FSC Chain of Custody Certification helps companies comply with public or private procurement policies.
FSC Controlled Wood: Companies that comply with the five FSC Controlled Wood criteria can supply FSC Controlled Wood to FSC Chain of Custody operations. FSC Controlled Wood supports the production of FSC Mixed Sources. FSC Certified companies can use the provided tools to control non-FSC certified wood in their product line to avoid wood from unsustainable sources.
Social Commitment
The Forest Stewardship Council A.C. (FSC) promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.
Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures the harvest of timber and non-timber products maintains the forest's biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes.
Socially beneficial forest management helps local people and society at large to enjoy long term benefits and provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources and adhere to long-term management plans.
Economically viable forest management ensures that forest operations are sufficiently profitable, without generating financial profit at the expense of the forest resource, the ecosystem, or affected communities. The tension between the need to generate adequate financial returns and the principles of responsible forest operations can be reduced through efforts to market a full range of products and services for their best value.
