Profile

Under The Sleeping Buffalo Research is an environmental research firm. Incorporated in 1998, we are a registered not-for-profit company that provides research services and support to the public, businesses, government agencies, other not-for-profit groups, and all users of Canadian national parks. Our mission is to ensure the conservation of natural heritage in Canada’s national parks and promote environmentally sustainable solutions for mountain communities. UTSB Research has been actively engaged in environmental education and advocacy efforts in Banff National Park for the past decade. We have no political affiliations and serve as an independent environmental monitor in Banff National Park.

Our vision is to ensure the long-term protection of the natural and cultural heritage of Banff National Park and to encourage advocacy thereof.

Environmental Commitment

We identify potential threats to the ecological integrity of the Town of Banff and of Banff National Park, and through ongoing monitoring, research, and lobby efforts, we encourage town and park regulators to minimize, reverse, and/or mitigate negative environmental impacts. As active participants in a number of stakeholder committees, steering committees, and other public processes, we bring sound environmental research to discussions amongst federal and municipal political representatives, industry stakeholders, and members of the public. We receive support from Sierra Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) and the Environmental Law Centre (ELC) in some of our endeavors.

Social Commitment

As part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, Banff National Park attracts the interest of people from around the world. Indeed, many of the people who live in Banff have come from elsewhere in Canada, and the world, and have chosen to live here because they love this place. Through our internship program and public presentations and lectures, UTSB has established partnerships with post-secondary institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and government and regulatory agencies in the work of making our home a better place.
